You are going bald. You are now ‘officially’ ugly.
Pain.
Now that you are ugly, no girl will like you.
Pain.
You’ll never get married.
Pain.
You’re now a loser. Forever.
More pain.
I can’t believe these were some ACTUAL thoughts that used to haunt me many years ago. 🫨
The funny thing is I am now FULLY bald, MUCH older and STILL single. 🤣
However, the thoughts in my head have transformed and the pain is gone.
Having experienced what it’s like to be trapped in a cycle of negative thoughts and trying all the traditional approaches without success (finding a hobby, socialising… you know the drill), I want to share with you the 4 steps that actually made a difference.
If you are someone logical but stuck in a negative thought-loop, I hope this helps you too.
Step 1: Separating Thoughts & Emotions
Let’s start with the root of the problem - negative thoughts. Here’s a surprising truth: There’s no such thing as a negative thought. A thought is just a thought, neutral and harmless on its own. It only becomes “negative” when we attach an emotion to it, like anger, fear, or guilt.
So here’s the trick: Separate the thought from the emotion. Treat your thoughts as ‘just’ thoughts… like water flowing through a stream - no big deal.
The moment you do this, you strip it of its power. This simple shift can stop you from spiralling into a deep well of negativity. Keep the thought neutral, and you’re already on the path to turning pain into power. You will still need to deal with painful emotions & feelings, so let’s deal with them next.
Step 2: Pain vs Suffering ~ Understanding the Difference and Gaining Control
When it comes to emotions, it's crucial to understand the difference between pain and suffering. Pain can be inflicted on you, but suffering is self-inflicted. Pain is what happens to you, but suffering is how you respond.
Pain lasts for seconds, minutes, even days. But suffering can last for years!
But here’s the strange bit: The sooner you consciously move TO suffering the better. I know that sounds strange, but not only does this make you realise that you are in control, but it also brings time into perspective. The event has already happened, it’s in the past. Now it’s entirely up to you as to how you respond.
Yes, pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional. Recognize when you’re choosing to suffer, and flip that switch off. It’s a powerful step toward gaining control over your emotional well-being.
Step 3: Avoiding the “You” Trap
When life throws you a curveball, it’s easy to get stuck in your own head. You might start asking, “Why is this happening to me?” or “What should I do now?” This strong focus on yourself can actually make things worse.
When you’re in this “Me, Myself, and I” mode, it’s easy to slip into a victim mindset. Your thoughts can spiral out of control, and rational thinking goes out the window. Here’s a pro tip: When you notice yourself getting caught up in too many self-focused thoughts, consider it a sign to step out of that state.
Also remember that no matter what you’re going through, you matter. Your life matters. This might sound like motivation, but it’s true. Never underestimate your value or question your self-worth.
Step 4: Going Beyond Logic
So far, we’ve tackled thoughts, emotions, pain, and suffering with a logical approach. But here’s the critical point you need to remember: When you’re overwhelmed by strong emotions like anger or grief, logic alone won’t help. Don’t try to fight emotion with logic. Instead, use a stronger, positive emotion to overpower it.
This is where the real magic happens. Instead of letting negative thoughts create painful emotions, flip the script. Use positive emotions to generate powerful, constructive thoughts. It’s like turning your pain into power!
But here’s the challenge: We often wait for something external to trigger positive emotions. The good news? You can create these emotions anytime you want. And the only way out is in.
Master Your Emotions, Master Your Life
There are many ways to master this final step, but they all involve some form of looking within. I used to think meditation was a waste of time, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It’s a complete game changer IF you know what you are doing.
To be honest, I am still not a big fan of most mainstream guided meditations out there. That’s why I created ALYV… music-only sessions that are as short as 5 minutes. But this isn’t about promoting ALYV or even meditation, find any program that helps you gain emotional freedom, emotional resilience and control over your thoughts.
Your thoughts and emotions will shape your future. Don’t let negative thoughts lead the way. When positive emotions take the driver’s seat, you will start creating incredibly powerful thoughts that propel you forward.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Tolerate Suffering
Like someone wise once said, in life, you don’t get what you deserve… you get what you tolerate. So, never settle. All it takes is a little flip to turn pain into power.
Remember you have the power to rewrite your story. Start today, even if it’s just one small step of separating your thoughts from emotions. Your future self will thank you.
